Any place that you might need for your cycling experience and that can be visualized on a map is called a POI (Point of Interest), as commonly used in GPS navigation. We have been categorising these points to make it easier and quicker for you to find what you actually need.

You can search for restaurants, accommodation, both natural and man-made attractions and many more. You can refine your POI search using filters by ratings, opening hours, services, as well as whether they meet your cycling-friendly expectations or if you can chat with them within the HortoBike system.

If you find a place that you think should be displayed on the HortoBike map, please feel free to use the POI recommendation function you can launch with the icon at the bottom left of the map. Our team will check your suggestion and if we find that everything is ok, you will soon be able to see your own POI on the map.

Some of the routes we have defined are not necessarily recommended for cycling in rainy conditions, despite ongoing regular maintenance. After a heavy rain there may be sodden, muddy dirt roads on which it is a challenge to push the bike up even days later. To avoid such a situation please use the filter in rainy times.

The groundwork for the Hungarian cycling-friendly certification system was laid based on available international experience. The basic requirement for obtaining the certification is the availability of a range of services varying by POI category. You can find out about the services provided by each POI by clicking on the Services tab in its profile.

To help other cyclists, please rate POIs and routes with 1-5 stars based on your own experience. You can always change your rating later, so fellow cyclists can always benefit from the most recent reviews.

The HortoBike project was implemented in the priority tourist development area of ​​Debrecen, Hajdúszoboszló, Hortobágy and Lake Tisza. Its goal is to implement cycling developments in the region - based on the cycling tourism of Lake Tisza - that encourage cyclists to explore additional destinations in the priority development area with their bicycles. We are trying to achieve the above goal with 4 cycling routes to be designated and signposted in the Tisza-tó - Hortobágy - Hajdúszoboszló - Debrecen area. Our goal was also to increase the volume and proportion of cycling tourism, as well as to reduce the spatial and temporal concentration, to expand basic services, to expand the tourist service options by focusing on the network of bicycle-friendly service providers, to provide comprehensive information, and to promote networking. Thanks to all of this, we can be proud of the direct results of the project: the signposted cycling routes and rest areas; with five cycling sub-centres equipped with equipment parks in Debrecen, Hortobágy, Sarud, Abádszalók and Berekfürdő; with an innovative mobile application and website that meets the needs of cyclists. As a result of the above, we expect an increase in the number of guest nights in the affected regions, both domestically and, hopefully, again with regard to foreign tourists as well. Thanks to the infrastructural developments, the Lake Tisza - Hortobágy - Hajdúszoboszló - Debrecen area can be enjoyed by cyclists all year round.

The project was established by a consortium led by the Hungarian Cycling Federation with the participation of the Hungarian Tourism Agency LLC and the Hungarian Tourism Association Foundation, with the support of Széchenyi 2020 development plan, the Government of Hungary and the EU European Regional Development Fund.
